The
Upside Down Kingdom 2 Apr 2010
Jesus often say, “ The Kingdom of God is like this…..”
What is the Kingdom of God like. It is invisible but real, and subject to a
set of rules and kingdom principles that operate totally against the laws
of this world. For example, “Give, and it will be given to you”. “It is more
blessed to give than to receive”. Gospel is an entry to the Kingdom, and
blessings of kingdom come after we enter the kingdom. We must believe in it
to reap its rewards. Our beliefs affect our decision and behave. Prayer is
the instrument that builds the kingdom environment. Take time to pray in the
midst of terrible, confusing, stressful and difficult situations. God listen
to our prayers and answers them. The kingdom of God is God-centered and
others centered ( inside and outside the church) and the ethics of the
kingdom e.g servanthood, goodness …are paradoxical such as losing in order
to find it …etc and is opposite that of the world.
When people ask us why we are positive, not giving up
hope, having faith, believing there is always a way out, trusting that
beyond the bad is good, beyond the difficulties and failures are green
pastures and successes- tell them you believe in a kingdom that is not seen
in this world.
What God desires is that the kingdom of Heaven will be
experienced here on earth by human beings. The kingdom of God is liken to “
The upside Down kingdom:” where the king serves, taking the very nature of a
servant, against all the expectations of a Jewish King that will overthrown
the Romans. The death and resurrection of Jesus is paradoxically the
pinnacle of ultimate power. Now clothed with power, and knowing what the
kingdom is about, we must be committed to the King and kingdom. It is
upstream. Everyone around us is doing the same thing- thinking of
themselves, hoarding, being selfish, going after pleasure, wanting to be
served, not forgiving, hating, cursing, showing off, comparing,
competing..etc . And here we are trying to be servants, trying to think of
others, to forgive, love, respect, give , sacrifice,…etc It is not easy at all.
But when we live and operate by the principles of the kingdom, we live under
the protection and favor of the King. This is a great privilege and
responsibility to behold, to operate in it and partake its rewards.
Kingdom of God
Luke 22:24-30
24Also a dispute arose among them as to which of them
was considered to be greatest. 25Jesus said to them, "The kings of the
Gentiles lord it over them; and those who exercise authority over them call
themselves Benefactors. 26But you are not to be like that. Instead, the
greatest among you should be like the youngest, and the one who rules like
the one who serves. 27For who is greater, the one who is at the table or the
one who serves? Is it not the one who is at the table? But I am among you as
one who serves. 28You are those who have stood by me in my trials. 29And I
confer on you a kingdom, just as my Father conferred one on me, 30so that
you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom and sit on thrones, judging
the twelve tribes of Israel.
Luke 13:18-21
18Then Jesus asked, "What is the kingdom of God like?
What shall I compare it to? 19It is like a mustard seed, which a man
took and planted in his garden. It grew and became a tree, and the birds of
the air perched in its branches."
20Again he asked, "What shall I compare the kingdom of
God to? 21 It is like yeast that a woman took and mixed into a large
amount[a] of flour until it worked all through the dough."
Matt 13:44
44"The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in
a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went
and sold all he had and bought that field.
Matt 13:45-49
45"Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant
looking for fine pearls. 46When he found one of great value, he went
away and sold everything he had and bought it.
The Parable of the Net
47"Once again, the kingdom of heaven is like a net
that was let down into the lake and caught all kinds of fish. 48When it
was full, the fishermen pulled it up on the shore. Then they sat down and
collected the good fish in baskets, but threw the bad away. 49This is how it
will be at the end of the age. The angels will come and separate the wicked
from the righteous
Luke 22:15-16
15And he said to them, "I have eagerly desired to eat
this Passover with you before I suffer. 16For I tell you, I will not
eat it again until it finds fulfillment in the kingdom of God."
Luke 22:21-22
21But the hand of him who is going to betray me
is with mine on the table. 22The Son of Man will go as it has been decreed,
but woe to that man who betrays him."
Acts 20:35
35In everything I did, I showed you that by this kind
of hard work we must help the weak, remembering the words the Lord Jesus
himself said: 'It is more blessed to give than to receive.' "
Luke 6:38
38 Give, and it will be given to you. A good
measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into
your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you."
Matt 5:33-37
33"Again, you have heard that it was said to the people
long ago, 'Do not break your oath, but keep the oaths you have made to the
Lord.' 34But I tell you, Do not swear at all: either by heaven, for it is
God's throne; 35or by the earth, for it is his footstool; or by Jerusalem,
for it is the city of the Great King. 36And do not swear by your head, for
you cannot make even one hair white or black. 37Simply let your 'Yes' be
'Yes,' and your 'No,' 'No'; anything beyond this comes from the evil one.
Matt 10:39
39Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever
loses his life for my sake will find it.
Phil 2:3-7
3Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit,
but in humility consider others better than yourselves. 4Each of you should
look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others.
5Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ
Jesus:
6Who, being in very nature[a] God,
did not consider equality with God something to
be grasped,
7but made himself nothing,
taking the very nature[b] of a servant,
being made in human likeness.
Heb 11:24-27
24By faith Moses, when he had grown up, refused to be
known as the son of Pharaoh's daughter. 25He chose to be mistreated along
with the people of God rather than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a short
time. 26He regarded disgrace for the sake of Christ as of greater value than
the treasures of Egypt, because he was looking ahead to his reward. 27By
faith he left Egypt, not fearing the king's anger; he persevered because he
saw him who is invisible.
John 18:36
36Jesus said, "My kingdom is not of this world. If it
were, my servants would fight to prevent my arrest by the Jews. But now my
kingdom is from another place."
Heb:11:13-16
13All these people were still living by faith when they
died. They did not receive the things promised; they only saw them and
welcomed them from a distance. And they admitted that they were aliens and
strangers on earth. 14People who say such things show that they are looking
for a country of their own. 15If they had been thinking of the country they
had left, they would have had opportunity to return. 16Instead, they were
longing for a better country—a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to
be called their God, for he has prepared a city for them.
